Interned with PASS AmeriCorps

I had a unique intent for taking on my internship with PASS AmeriCorps this summer. As an aspiring lawyer, I could’ve chosen an internship with a law firm. Instead, I chose to spend my summer with 5th-8th grade students at the Middleton Youth Center (MYC). Along with desiring a rewarding summer job, the idea behind taking this internship was to strengthen my own social-emotional skills. I wanted to develop better patience, empathy, leadership, and communication. I believe that this internship did just that.

Over the course of the summer, I’ve led science, art, and cooking mini courses. I also had the opportunity to build great relationships with the students and staff at the MYC. Through spending the majority of my week with a population of students with behavioral issues and difficult upbringings, I’ve also gained a new perspective. I am so grateful that I had a chance to be a part of a program that is effectively shaping the future of many Middleton students for the better.

Overall, this internship taught me more than I could’ve imagined. I wouldn’t take back my decision to spend my summer not only improving the character of the MYC students but my also my own. My experience this summer will forever shape the way I view life, and the skills I’ve gained and strengthened will have a lasting impact on my future career path.
